Majidi’s heart-warming film, encompassing cute children, dire poverty, lost shoes, and some rather improbable and nonsensical plotting, somehow manages to avoid the sentimentality that such a tale would normally embrace, and instead comes across as an ode to love, kindness, and determination that, against all the odds, is beautifully moving rather than painfully corny.
