The terribly inconsistent Winterbottom’s best film so far, based on the factual book by Mariane Pearl, chronicling Pakistani and American attempts to locate her kidnapped journalist husband in Karachi, A Mighty Heart is an intimate, briskly paced, naturalistic, suspenseful, beautifully performed (Irfan Khan, in particular, is excellent), and ultimately devastatingly moving minor-masterpiece, which explores the stories behind the headlines.
