Affleck’s feature-length directorial debut, an adaptation of Lehane’s novel about a couple of young detectives’ attempts to locate a missing young girl, is a beautifully paced, exceptionally acted, well observed, and thought provoking portrait of damaged lives, as well as an unflinching and grimly moving exploration of tough moral issues.
